October 2016 Newsletter

Fall greetings everyone! Scroll below to see what we have in store for you in our October newsletter:

  1. Our pelvic floor therapist, Iwalani Crush, encounters clients who experience stress urinary incontinence, AKA leakage during exercise or exertion activities. Typically, this issue occurs when there is increased internal pressure against weak or underactive pelvic floor muscles. Traditionally, therapy exercises in conjunction with biofeedback have been effective in treating this issue. However, being open to adjunct interventions to bolster outcomes, especially in more challenging cases, is the mark of good therapist. This month, an article outlining the use of acupuncture and electro-acupuncture combined with PT exercises in the treatment of stress incontinence demonstrated an 86% success rate in reducing leakage (volume, frequency).
  2. According to a report published in Annals of Internal Medicine, the average person spends more than half of his or her waking hours in an inactive state (sitting at a computer, watching TV, commuting to and from work, etc). For the majority of us, sitting at the computer comprises our work day. Unfortunately, prolonged sitting can have negative impacts on not only our posture (musculoskeletal, pain, weakness), but energy/mood (mental), circulation (vascular), as well as organ function (visceral). Whoah!
  3. This month, we at DSPT had the privilege of speaking with Marissa Vicario--NYC local Certified Health and Nutrition Coach and author of best-selling book, Your Holistically Hot Transformation. She spoke of her own journey to wellness, as well as client guidance for making healthy, fit and balanced lifestyle choices. She is an amazing example of how health coaches can help clients make attainable nutrition choices regardless of where they are on their wellness journey.

We at DSPT are here to guide you, not solely with your exercise prescription and postural corrections, but toward the right direction in attaining your wellness goals, so you can be your healthiest and smartest self!

For those of you interested in the acupuncture and/or nutrition aspects of this article, follow the above links to check out relevant podcasts, blogs, bios, as well as a raffle to win a free copy of Marissa Vicario's book. Happy fall!

Yours in Health,

Jon, Pete, Iwalani, Mila, Bridget & Alan
