Andrew had been experiencing lower and upper back pain that came and went since 2015. Occasionally, the pain would also travel down his left lower leg and further worsen his condition. This pain, combined with the fact that Andrew worked a sedentary desk job, caused him to become very inactive and constantly tired, which is what led him to come see us at Dynamic Sports Physical Therapy in New York City.
With his initial evaluation, it was noted that Andrew had a great deal of weakness in his core muscles, as well as poor movement patterns during squatting, stepping up and sitting, and a loss of flexibility in his legs. He also reported that he would have random back spasms without any cause, which highly discouraged him from doing his normal activities of daily living. Based on these findings, Andrew’s therapist diagnosed him with chronic upper and lower back pain.
Before beginning treatment, Andrew stated that he was hoping to be pain-free on a regular basis and capable of participating in physical exercise once again, which his condition had prevented him from doing. Based on his diagnosis, treatment started with a course of core and gluteus strengthening exercises to help him regain his strength in the muscles surrounding the spine. This was combined with upper and lower back stability training, which was intended to improve Andrew’s posture while sitting and standing at work all day. The final ingredient was a home-exercise program that consisted of stretching, core exercises and activity modification, performed on a regular basis at home.
Along with the work completed within our clinic, Andrew was also very diligent about completing his home-exercise program as instructed. Currently, he is still coming to physical therapy consistently to continue improving the strength of his core and upper spine. Most importantly, Andrew eliminated the daily pain he was feeling in his back, started participating in a weekly boxing class, improved his physical fitness and endurance, and has changed the outlook on his life!
